Drill and cut
Live tested settings
Settings run on the machine with MSC Edge applications engineering, for the drill and material selected in the preset box. Use carries the cutting speed and feed per rev across to any drill size.
How it's calculated
n = 1000 · Vc ÷ (π · Dc) and Vf = n · fn. In the other direction Vc = π · Dc · n ÷ 1000 and fn = Vf ÷ n. Time per hole is depth ÷ Vf for the cutting portion only, with no approach, retract or pecks.
The catalogue gives a Vc range per material for 3xD and 5xD, and an fn range per material at Ø3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. Sizes between those columns are interpolated in a straight line; the note under the preset box says when that has happened. "Book mid" is the middle of each range.
Grade finder is a lookup only: it picks the material row (and a typical hardness for steels) for a grade name. It adds no cutting data of its own.
Estimated groups are materials MSC do not print. Each one is the nearest MSC group multiplied by a factor taken from general coated-carbide drilling tables (for example martensitic stainless = MSC austenitic × 0.75, titanium = austenitic × 0.6, aluminium = low carbon steel × 2). Steel by hardness reads between MSC's three printed steel groups on Brinell hardness (anchors 110, 220 and 390 HB). These are a starting guess, not catalogue data: start at the low end and record what works in the live box.
About this calculator
This calculator is built and run by Infinite Engineering Ltd. Catalogue figures are taken from MSC Edge's published data with their permission; live tested settings are recorded by our team. Materials marked Estimated are Infinite Engineering's own scaling from MSC's published groups, not MSC data.
MSC Edge is MSC's own range of multipurpose solid carbide tooling, designed by their applications engineers to cover around 80% of everyday machining with 20% of the tools. The drills are TiAlN coated, 140° self-centring, in 3xD (no through coolant) and 5xD (through coolant) lengths from Ø3 to Ø16. Every tool is tested at MSC's UK Technology Centre and carries a 30-day money-back guarantee within the recommended parameters.
